Gazing on God Through Art | 02

Written By Holy Scripture

Read or listen to Romans 8:1-5.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit.

What does this passage communicate about your new life in the Spirit?

The written Scripture is CSB, however, the audio Scripture is ESV.

When approached with eyes wide open to God’s presence, gazing at beauty in art can be the Holy Spirit’s avenue for an awareness of union with God and spiritual wholeness.

Spend a few minutes meditating on this art.

Keeping the art in mind, wait in prayerful silence for 5 minutes. Write down what the Holy Spirit shows you.

Week 2 of 8 Contemplation

John Frontispiece, The Word Made Flesh from The Saint John’s Bible

Artist: Donald Jackson

This illumination is the frontispiece to the Gospel of John in The Saint John’s Bible. Stepping out of darkness, which alludes to the chaos that precedes Creation in the Bible, the golden figure of Christ brings light and order. Words in golden script, from Colossians 1:15-20, link the figure of Christ with the words “And lived among us” at the upper right. A keyhole jutting into the left margin recalls the tradition of locked and hinged manuscripts in securing, protecting, and holding the “key” to the word of God.
